The Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) is a new global telecommunications system designed by the UIC in close cooperation with rail sector stakeholders as a successor to GSM-R, but also as a key element enabling the digitalization of rail transport.
FRMCS solutions and applications are built on MCX services and utilize a 5G network for the transport layer, supporting ultra-reliable low-latency critical communication. It creates a platform for innovative applications—from group video calls and automated train control to predictive maintenance and high-speed on-board Wi-Fi. It provides secure and reliable connectivity for people, sensors, trains, video, and automated train control systems.
